Robert,

The only thing the bombing has accomplished is reducing Serbia's military hardware and infrastructure, thus its ability to threaten the KLA with tanks and jets or for that matter extending the conflict to its neighbors.

The result is that now the two forces are being placed on a more even keel militarily as a predominantly infantry-based small unit force. Furthermore, removing the heavy equipment from the equation undermines Milosevic's grip on power since the most irritating thing for a country's military to face is losing their "toys". This has obviously not gone over well with their general staff.

Finally, the Serbs face the prospect of a protracted guerilla war with their Albanian neighbors through the KLA. However, the KLA is facing a internal fight for leadership as NATO tries to reshape from a predominantly Marxist oriented organization to one bent on providing a ground force in Kosovo should Milo decide not to "play ball". The KLA is a pawn on the Balkan chessboard and as such are considered expendable should other means prove successful at resolving the Kosovo problem.

Something tells me the KLA won't like being told to disband and go away unless they get what they want. But then again, hopefully the new found economic support Albania is receiving from the west will provide the necessary counterbalance to keep the KLA in check and managable.

Regards,

Ron
