Selecting sectors might unduly overload someone if their sector got very hot. If that happened, trying to choose one or two from the sector might put too much final decision making pressure on that individual. If it was done by letter, a hot sector would automatically receive more entries on the final list since the stocks from that sector would rise to the top selections across the alphabet. Then with that in hand, the entire group of contributors would have equal access to all those stocks that are presented from that sector.
Also, it's almost like running a double blind on the initial hit list. You wouldn't be as aware that a certain sector was coming up hot and that would tend to prevent you from subconsciously favoring a sector. You would be more inclined to choose the hottest stock in your subset.
Does that make sense or am I pushing the alphabetical thing too hard?
