"nor can I say that the limitation of regular heroin users to about half a million is so bad, considering the alternative."

In the late 1800s when drugs were legal, and before the 'drug problem' was discovered, approximately 1 in 400 adults was addicted to some sort of opiate derivative. In a population of 250 million, that would equate to 625,000 addicts. For saving 125,000 people from their own stupidity, we get a marked increase in burglaries. We have place control of the distribution channel in the hands of unscrupulous criminals. We get a marked increase in AIDS. Of course this assumes that the 500k number is correctly reported.

Why is it that you have such little regard for your fellow man that you think that you think that so many would choose to jump into the abyss of heroin addiction without the staying influence of a benevolent paternal gov't?
