Telenor and Nera Profit from Iridium Problems

RDSL

07 May 1999

Telenor Satellite Services and Nera (both Norway), telecoms
firm, are profiting from problems faced by Iridium (US), satellite
firm. The result so far for the firms has been increased sales of
telephones and increased traffic via Inmarsat's mobile satellite
services.

Telenor has seen stronger traffic growth than expected for
Mobiq, Inmarsat service, in the period from November 1998,
with an increase of 15-20%. In the same period, a total of 1,800
telephones have been sold, mainly Nera units.

Iridium has faced problems with a shortage of good quality
telephones and a poor sales network.
