Al, I have no idea what world that you live in but rest assured that Lucent doesn't need to do something fast or die. And for the 10 time there is so little that Lucent could actually use from 3Com that to purchase them would be foolish! So Lucent is the now the largest cable operator and 3Com is the largest cable modem manufacturer. Big deal! So Lucent works out an incredible purchase agreement for cable modems and 3Com gets a high volume with a low margin on them. Remote Access equipment - Lucent has purchased Livingston and Ascend. I don't see anything that 3Com could add to this equation. PCMCIA, Modems, Interface cards - Decent volume with low price structure. Not exactly the kind of product line that would expanded Lucent's margins. I don't see the synergies. Palm Pilot - This is a neat series of devices. But this would be totally out of character for Lucent's product line. Do you really think that Lucent wants to move into this new consumer market? Token Ring & Ethernet legacy products - If Lucent wanted this market they would buy Cabletron and get the best network management software in the business, Spectrum, for free. I have tried to explain to you before that if there is a 'White Knight' out there for 3Com it isn't Lucent. Cheers, Steve
