Symbol Technologies and 3Com to Deliver Wireless LAN Solutions for High Speed Data Communications
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 1999--Symbol Technologies (NYSE: SBL), a worldwide leader in wireless local area networking (LAN), mobile computing and data capture systems and services, and 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS), a worldwide leader in converged networks, today announced they have co-developed an 11Mbps direct sequence wireless LAN solution based on Symbol's award-winning technology for wireless data communications. This high-speed, IEEE-standards-based system offers long-awaited benefits of mobility and streamlined network management in the office that have been long-proven in vertical market applications at lower speeds. The business could bring significant new revenue to Symbol in the next six to nine months. "Working together, the two companies make the most of their unique and complementary strengths: Symbol has extensive, in-depth experience in delivering innovative wireless LAN and mobile computing solutions for corporate enterprises and public institutions within vertical markets served by Symbol, while 3Com leads in supplying networking solutions, services and support to the broader market of corporate enterprises," said Tomo Razmilovic, president and chief operating officer, Symbol Technologies. "We're able to provide the best wireless LAN solution - from Symbol's wireless network management system, to innovative technology, to global support in the world of convergence between data, voice and multimedia on a single wireless network. "We are extremely pleased that 3Com, a world leader in enterprise networking, has chosen to work with Symbol to develop high-speed wireless LAN solutions." Symbol will market the 11Mbps direct sequence offering under Symbol's Spectrum24 solution set. With its high-speed data transfer rate, the 11Mbps wireless solution supports new applications involving large graphics files and multimedia. Spectrum24 also features a 2Mbps frequency hopping system to support data and voice-over-IP applications common in healthcare, retail, education, logistics, hospitality, manufacturing and other industries where extended coverage and battery life are essential. "3Com is coming from a position of strength in delivering networks to enterprises of all sizes," said Rich Redelfs, general manager of 3Com's Wireless Connectivity Division. "We will build upon our leadership in wired networks to make simple and reliable wireless connectivity a reality for our customers." At Networld+Interop, 3Com will introduce the high-speed 3Com AirConnect wireless LAN solution for enterprise customers. The 3Com AirConnect products will increase worker productivity by providing simple and reliable access to information and network services, enabling users to roam throughout the campus and still stay connected. The wireless LAN also offers corporations greater flexibility -allowing them to wirelessly add temporary workgroups and to reconfigure workspaces without expensive rewiring. |
