Yep, if you like a stock bad enough you pay the ASK price; if you want to try a limit order just under the ask for an hour or two, it is often worth a try.

The moral is: buy stocks when they are cheap and use some common sense. You won't get any give-away prices, but at least you may find some MM's willing to sell it a little cheaper when the spread is wide.

If they won't then maybe they are either short stock or they are anticipating a run up
