As a rule the British people tend to absolutely trust the Prime minister of the day on important issues. Once the British people have elected a Prime Minister it is a very special bond between the people and the Prime Minister so when Mr Chamberlain landed got down from his aeroplane waving the paper in 1938 most British people believed him. "Peace in our Time"

As I say it was a bit of a shock to then find later that war had come again.
