Department of the Navy Signs Enterprisewide Licensing Agreement With Visio
PR Newswire - May 10, 1999 09:16

Agreement Will Provide Users With Powerful Suite of Graphics Solutions

SEATTLE, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) and the Department of the Navy (DON) today announced a new enterprise agreement offering significant benefits to both the DON and the Department of Defense (DOD). This blanket purchase agreement represents the first software licensing agreement the DON has negotiated on behalf of itself with extension to the entire DOD. This agreement will provide DOD customers with a centralized approach to purchasing Visio drawing and diagramming products, allowing users to license Visio products and upgrades over a two-year period.

The agreement includes the following Visio products: Visio(R) Standard, Visio Professional, Visio Technical, Visio Enterprise, IntelliCAD(R) 98 by Visio and Visio Network Equipment. Each product is designed to meet individual user needs that correspond to specific job functions.

"The services of Visio Corp. will greatly benefit the U.S. military and are a wise use of taxpayer dollars," said Sen. Slade Gorton, member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. "I applaud Visio and the Department of the Navy for taking the lead in negotiating this type of agreement. I expect this will become more common in the government sector, as government agencies witness the value of negotiating an initial contract that simplifies the purchasing process with one central approach. It's the most cost-effective way of doing business."

"To help our users meet the serious challenges they face in discharging their duties, the DON places a high priority on providing leading technology that enhances their work environments," said Daniel Porter, the DON's chief information officer. "This Visio agreement will provide our personnel with a graphical communications tool for exchanging drawings and diagrams that ultimately will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our communications. Further, by consolidating the purchasing process of Visio products, we believe that extending the Visio purchasing agreement to the entire DOD will save time and money for the military departments and defense agencies."

"This agreement demonstrates Visio's commitment to serving the visual communications needs of the government customer," said Jeremy Jaech, president and CEO of Visio. "The breadth and flexibility of Visio's functionality makes it one of the only products that could satisfy the wide range of drawing needs of an organization as large as the Department of the Navy."

Visio Technology Brings Graphics to the Desktop of the DON and DOD

Elements of the DON are already using Visio products to create mechanical drawings of their surface ships, generate flowcharts for training manuals, and document the IT assets deployed across networks. This agreement will expand usage of Visio in the DON by delivering a common purchasing framework for deploying a graphical tool that allows users to easily create, exchange and store a wide variety of task-specific Visio drawings and diagrams. This new agreement includes the following Visio products:

* Visio Standard enables users to easily transfer ideas into effective
images that communicate business processes, ideas, projects and plans.
* Visio Technical is design software for engineers who create or review
2-D technical drawings and diagrams with intelligent object technology
enabling even those engineers not expert in CAD to produce technical
diagrams.
* IntelliCAD 98 offers Autodesk AutoCAD compatibility, Microsoft Windows
integration, and productivity features that streamline work. Like
AutoCAD, IntelliCAD uses the DWG file format as its native format.
IntelliCAD 98 also supports the AutoCAD command line, as well as
Autodesk AutoLISP and ADS programs.
* Visio Professional enables IT managers to design and document an
organization's information systems and business processes and to
streamline interdepartmental or cross-functional communications.
* Visio Enterprise is a tool designed for IT professionals who develop,
manage and maintain enterprise information systems. Visio Enterprise
includes specific tools for each of the three IT domains: network
documentation, database design and software engineering.
* Visio Network Equipment is an add-on solution for designing and
documenting networks. It includes over 12,000 exact-replica hardware
shapes for more than 300 network and telecommunication hardware
manufacturers. The product is designed for use with Visio Professional
to offer a complete network management solution.
