*Microsoft and Nextel plan a wireless portal to work with hand-held communications devices, cellular phones and interactive pagers*

On the surface, it looks like Microsoft is hedging its Wireless Knowledge venture.

As for the impact on VARL . . . The folks on this thread may recall that VARL is currently providing VCOs for the Acessmate II from Wireless Access (a division of Glenayre). Networks utilizing the advanced pagers are: MCI, SkyTel, Pagemart Wireless, PageNet, and Conxus. So, a logical assumption would be that Nextel may become a customer also. If I remember correctly, Nextel gets the great majority of its handsets and pagers from our friends at MOT (please correct me if I am wrong).

VARL already does a lot of business with MOT. You may also recall that I pointed out that the VCO division at MOT was sold to its managers recently. I have looked upon this event favorably because VARL has been selected ahead of the MOT VCO unit in the past (even when the unit was in-house). A recent example of this is the Iridium handsets.

Overall, it looks positive.
