The flowers were brought by friends, Blue. Other guests brought wine and/or desserts. My younger son and his wife bought me a card, but forgot to bring it. My other son (father of my two grandsons) and his new wife (not their mother) phoned me.

As I said, we never made a fuss over Mother's Day, because I always thought it a purely commercial holiday, invented by retailers in order get folks to buy as much unnecessary stuff as possible for their mothers, to compensate for neglecting them the rest of the year.

Turns out, I was wrong.

I may have acquired this distaste for pumped-up holidays from my paternal grandmother. She was a devout Catholic, and vehemently objected to what she said was the commercialization of Christmas. I can recall spending one Christmas with my grandparents, by myself. As a concession to me, there was a little tree -- but it was undecorated, and there were no presents under it. And there was a Christmas stocking. Imagine my disappointment, when I found nothing in it but tangerines and some nuts!

But going to midnight mass was exciting....I got to stay up late!

P.S. The grandkids' art is on the fridge, in between the classic "Calvin and Hobbes" and "Outland" cartoons. It's getting a little greasy, so I will either have to laminate it or request some newer art...
