Progress Software To Port Its Technology To Linux FRIDAY, MAY 07, 1999 2:11 PM EST - TechWeb
May 07, 1999 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- The Linux market will get a boost this fall when Progress Software begins shipping Linux versions of its database, application server, and 4GL development environment.
Progress' plans, to be officially announced May 24, aresignificant because there are more than 5,000 commercial applications built on top of the company's software, such as ERP software from QAD and financial-service applications from Fiserv. Those applications will immediately be able to run in Linux environments without alteration once Progress completes its porting work. Progress will initially support its products on the Red Hat Software version of Linux for Intel-based systems.
Linux's popularity has exploded in the last year because of its performance and reliability. But its growth in commercial computing environments has been hindered by a lack of applications. In recent months, a number of software heavyweights, including Computer Associates and SAP, have announced their intention to port their software to the open source operating system.
