Softball, we didn't have softballs, or balls, or bats. With sticks and rocks and a lot of 'cars coming' we played with no ump, few brawls, and many runs.

Once, they had a man, Earnest, on first grate. My first grateman and I tossed it back and forth to keep him close, but he was determined. Finally, my man faked return of the ball. I dawdled, Earnest led off. The first baseman tagged him out, and there was much rejoicing.
Do you think I expected to continue pitching the game without a ball? Was I then over eager to show I had none until the play had played out?

The play hasn't played out.
