Set tops: Steve Jobs is betting against "convergence" I read in a Magazine interview. He said: Brain engaged when on computer, disengaged - enjoying entertainment - when watching TV. Two things will not converge.

Intuitively, it makes sense to me. But I am often contrarian or ahead of the time. Couldn't really predict where this will end up. Why not have two places ? Who is going to surf with a wireless keyboard or at least with a wireless mouse, in bed ?? Pray tell !

So, this may be the explanation why Apple is not after set top stuff.
IBM neither ? Yeah, good point to ponder.

In the end most households will have an optical fiber coming into the house. Why can't that be split? Certainly it will have to be split for the phone. We are not going to use the converged Computer-TV for phone calls. My 1970's Zenith Color TV had a feature to use the TV set for phone calls, mute the TV (when the phone rings while you are on the couch) and have the speakers talk to you, a mike to pick up your answer. That was before cordless phones. Ideal ! ?

You know what ? We never bothered to connect it.
