Remember to add into your equation the following:

When the PLCOP converts, the common will get hit hard and may not sustain a price like $5 as you suggest. IMO the Pfd. is a better buy but may be a longer term hold than the common and may not increase as fast as the common.

Also - As far as I know (read the filings) the PLCOP was paid, in part, to retire a note owed by PLCO. The noteholders who received PLCOP have been selling to get their investment back. That is why I believe the Pfd. is so low. There should be no other reason for the Pfd. to be selling at this price.
