Nevertheless, let me address some of your questions/remarks:

There is a bigger difference in age than you think. You may be a "late bloomer", but I am a "late fader".

But you have got to be kidding when you ask "Marlene Who?" So I won't answer the question.

I used to think <g> meant "giggle", so I never used it. I started to use it when I learned it is supposed to mean "grin." There is also "VBG" (Very Big Grin). And "IMO" means "in my opinion". If it is honest, you may write "IMHO" -- "in my honest opinion." And so forth. It pays to use these expressions, along with smiley faces, to smooth the sometimes very rough patches that emerge in the course of cyberspace communication.
