Ericsson has won an international tender and signed a turnkey contract, valued at USD 33 million (SEK 270 million), with the General Telecommunications Organization (GTO) for expansion and upgrading of the existing GSM 900 network in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.
Under the terms of the contract, Ericsson will deliver the latest generation platform of Mobile Services Switching Center (MSC), Base Station Controller (BSC) and Radio Base Stations (RBS). The network capacity will increase to 127,000 subscribers by the end of 2000.
"The contract will enable GTO to rapidly expand their capacity and meet the public demand for new services in their network," says Sune Larsson, General Manager, Ericsson, Oman.
The General Telecommunications Organization (GTO) is the sole operator in the Sultanate of Oman providing telecoms services to the public. GTO initiated GSM services in Oman in 1996. Ericsson has been the main supplier of GSM systems to the Sultanate of Oman since 1997.
