I disagree with your friends analysis of the most recent data on the Ragweed vaccine. IMUL conducted a double blinded study and demonstrated a 19% reduction in symptom score when comparing the Ragweed vaccine with placebo. This was statistically significant with p<.04. In addition the symptom score was reduced by ~40% when compared to a non-placebo control group. These results tell us two important facts: 1. the placebo effect is as significant as the actual drug effect (I expect this data would be similar in any allergy study) and 2. the likelihood of the 19% reduction in symptom score happening by chance is 4 out of 100. Therefore, IMUL's data is strong. No one argues that the drug really produces an effect. Remember most drugs do not give even a 50% improvement in the endpoint studied. Also a symptom score is different from blood pressure or another biochemical parameter in that it is a subjective symptom and not an objective measurement. As far as Genentech's IgE vaccine is concerned, this will not be competitioin at all. In fact it is likely that a combination of the two vaccines may be more effective than a single therapy. Allergy is a very complex mechanism involving IgE, histamine, cytokines, T-lymphocytes, and a host other immune factors. Therefore, there should be multiple sites of attack in blocking the immune response. I envision both therapies have a significant benefit to clinical allergy sufferers. However, IMUL will be there first.
