I think there's a hidden controversial point between the U.S. and their European partners (namely France and, to a lesser extent, Germany) which is the future status of Kosovo: France has repeatedly claimed that they don't want to hear about any ''border change'' in the Balkans. This means that they'd rather like to see an autonomous Kosovo inside the Yugoslav Republic. They don't want another independent country in the region. They say that if we allow such a radical geopolitical outcome to happen, it will set fire to the whole region... And that shows you their hypocrisy if you just switch to my post #3655 on this thread (Germany has blundered first by blessing the unilateral independence of both Slovenia and Croatia).
However, I think that the U.S. would be comfortable with an independent Kosovo, even if it implies a reunification with Albania in a few years. The advantage for the US with the second scenario is that they don't need a staunch pro-US executive in Belgrade to maintain a new Adriatic foothold whereas if Kosovo is kept under a loose Serbian authority, the US presence in the region will shrink to a defensive toehold in Albania...

My 2 cents,
Gustave.
