Taiwan Fuel Prices to Be Raised by 2.8 Percent
1999.05.12¡@2:55am Taiwan time updated
TAIPEI, May 11 (AFP) - Fuel prices in Taiwan will be raised by an average 2.8 percent due to a rise in the cost of crude oil imports, an official said Tuesday.

The increase, the second time this year, will become effective at midnight Wednesday, said Tsai San-lang, spokesman for the state monopoly Chinese Petroleum Corp.

Fuel prices were raised by an average 2.69 percent last month. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) voted in March to slash production to bolster oil prices which fell to historic lows last year.

Taiwan imports some 600,000 barrels of crude oil a day.
