....This is one of the most complex deals, with more smart players and more congruent and conflicting interest than I've ever seen,” Mr. Maffei said in an interview.....

Congruence adj agreeing to conform; in mathematics, having exactly the same size and shape

Dealmaking at the speed of light. I found interesting the use of a mathematical term like congruent in a major deal like this.

The mathematicians have been pooling their processor cycles to reduce the time it would take to solve extemely complex mathematical problems with the end view towards putting the solutions in the public domain to serve as building blocks for more practical solutions. The latest one (which carries a $750,000 economic incentive) contemplates the rapid solution to a particularly esoteric mathematical problem that would normally take 65,000 years to solve if done in small groups working separately.

This is similar to the way that Linus Torvalds developed Linux in 1991, the open source code movement to unify the babylonian UNIX (check out the GNOME interface). As it starts to develop the framework (free OS, integration, training, support and service) to sustain the collective effort of thousands of UNIX programmers, it starts to confront the same issues facing those who compete for the profits that go to those who service the cutting edge-mainstream-lagging edge segments of the small-midsized-high-end categories of the business market. These are markets with varying sets of performance targets aimed at various parts of the global market that is rapidly becoming internetized.

Anyway, a few months ago I saw an A&E 2-hour documentary on the Vatican's intention to use art as a means of communication and education to contribute to the complex process of reducing the gap between the developed and developing countries (currently estimated at 10 years in terms of the basics). IBM has been digitizing the archives since 1994.
