CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management has honored six companies as innovators in Web-based business.

The awards, presented Tuesday night, were developed by Sloan students as part of the school's electronic commerce and marketing curriculum. The school plans to give out the E-Commerce Awards annually.

The award winners were:

MP3.com Inc., of San Diego. The company is one of the leading sources of music in a digital, MP3 compressed format and was awarded for creating opportunities for customers through electronic commerce.

Egghead.com, based in Spokane, Wash., for successfully transforming itself from an established physical company to a Web-based business.

Dell Computers Corp., of Austin, Texas, for serving a large international base of Web customers. The company serves 44 countries and covers 21 languages.

Akamai Technologies Inc., based in Cambridge, for showing potential to dominate new industries. It offers a service that speeds up delivery of Web pages.

Net Perceptions, based in Minneapolis, for developing innovative technology. The company develops real-time technology.
