You're 100 percent right about the media doing a 180. Herb is
actually old fashioned. Most papers or mags see nothing wrong with
printing one thing one day and the opposite the next. They won't
even bother to note that they changed their mind because they figure
no one will even notice and maybe they don't even notice themselves.
Many of the writers are freelance so there's no loyalty.

I also suspect that the major studios that have not committed to DVD
like Disney and Fox probably talk down DVD if they are ever asked
about it. They do this because they make a huge ammount of money
in VHS video and they don't want to spoil that until DVD is really
up and running. Paramount is further complicated, because it is
owned by Viacom which also owns Blockbuster. Blockbuster has
a deal with Sony to show off DVD players in their stores and
Paramount will likely sell their disks right along side it.
Blockbuster could be hurt in the short run though if Video sales
drop and their inventories become worthless, so they are likely
delaying their promotions until the last minute as well. Disney
in particular has benefited from video and
they'll benefit all over again with DVD. Once they commit they'll
be DVD's biggest promoter. I don't have an inside info. but I
do work in Hollywood and have an idea how things go.
