AltiVec enhanced PowerPC prototype had seen silicon since around Q3 of 1998. Internally Motorola had planned to ship G4 processors by Q2 of 1999 (about now) but externally they've always said by Q3 of 1999. The production schedule seems to have slipped a bit. Internally now they expect G4 to ship during Q3.

When asked when G4s are expected to make it to market, Motorola folks said that they can only estimate when the chips will be shipped and were not willing to speculate when Apple will be able to ship G4 to market. The consensus was that Apple was trying to get G4 done around this Fall. While testing of AltiVec enabled "systems" has been around since at least Dec 1998 indicating that the project is moving along, it's unclear whether the overall schedule has been pushed back or not. I think what Apple likes to do is be a bit conservative in its guidance of when G4 will make it to the market. Too much build-up of anticipation for "the next big thing" product has a tendency to cause people to put off purchases which can impact sales if the release date is pushed back.
