Perky,

Nice to hear from you again here. I may have to agree with you about the demonstrations in China. In fact, it is all too transparent IMO. But I spoke with the head of Embassy Security here in Kuala Lumpur yesterday who said that there had been reports of Westerners being waylaid on the streets in China. I don't think we can write off all of the response to flame fanning by the authorities. There are, no doubt, some genuinely upset folks in China and I confess I am not too happy with the whole episode myself. Blunders like this one greatly undermine our posturing as the world's safe harbor of justice. As do episodes like the one we saw in Colorado recently IMO. I have no problem with drawing a line when madmen are on the loose and acts of "ethnic cleansing" occur. I believe we have a moral obligation to act and act swiftly. But when we botch it we should move quickly to atone. I, for one, would like to see the U.S. at least offer compensation to the family members of the dead newsmen.

FWIW a friend of mine who is on his way to China agrees with you in this sense when he wrote to me the following: "From my past experience there should be no problem. I've been there before while "Diplomatic Tempers" were flaring. The gov't of China is in absolute control over the situation, when they say enough is enough it just quietly goes away. The average Chinese "man in the street" usually doesn't get too worked up."

I guess I am more on the cautious side. I will cancel my trip in two weeks and will reschedule when things seem more calm.

Best,
Stitch
