Yep, I have read substantial portions of Rawls, and couldn't fathom why he was such a hit. I was raised in a moderately liberal family (Hubert Humphrey Democrats, one might say), and became radicalized along pacifist and anarcho- syndicalist lines in high school. It didn't last long, and I was what used to be called a neo- liberal by graduation. A couple of years later I decided to vote for Reagan, and ipso facto became a neoconservative (at the time, many neoconservatives were neo- liberals with the courage of their convictions). As time wore on, I became a conservative simpliciter, but I still use the handle to indicate something about background, and to distinguish me from the Buchananites.... |
