can a yank trade online through an account in your country?

I'm not sure - there may be some regulation probs. I had an account with Datek before I had an online account here (with Greenline - subsidiary of Toronto Dominion like Waterhouse). A friend here who never lived in the US (unlike me and I still have a US bank account too) also opened one. By the end of the year there will be online trading of US stocks through Australian online brokers - Commonwealth Securities and E-Trade Australia. Already there are options (warrants) on US and Japanese indexes traded on the regular stockmarket.

I'd check E-Trade Australia first if you want details on how to do it. They're probably more freindly to foreign investors. This is Greenline's site:
