G'day nihil, Stitch, Perky & all - I guess we are sort of in general agreement about the Chinese reaction. The only thing concerns me is what Eric Hoffer called "the plasticity of human nature." Since nihil has mentioned Cultural Revolution, it is a lesson PRC has to use well in this situation. A whole generation was wasted b/c the frenzy went out of control then. There were times I could still vividly conjure up the newspaper clippings of bound and gagged corpses fish out of the Pearl River [sad to say, similar images were piping in to the US family rooms from NAM a few years later!] But I digress. The point is that major disasters can be one miscalculation away. Words are that the Chinese authorities are moving in to reign in the situation. So maybe they have learned their lesson.

Still, Stitch's friend may be smart to stay away from the hot zone for the time being.

best, Bosco
