I wonder, though, whether there is on the American side of this divide the need still for an external enemy and Chinese fit the bill so well.

Interesting point. Now exchange the parties (Chinese for American and visa versa) and ask the same question.

There has been, with only the exception of N. Korea, no greater xenophobic nation on earth than communist China (and China is still communist at its political core, no matter how much we want to think differently). And xenophobes require an external threat to justify there lack of openess and excessive military spending.

The dirty little truth here is that all major powers use their overt and covert assets to influence events in countries where they feel they have an interest.

But I can't remember the last time (or the first time, for that matter) where the US used military force against a nation, which had not been guilty of mis-using ITS military forces in some manner against another nation or people.

Can someone help me out on this?? The only examples that immediately comes to mind are the Texas rebellion and Spanish American War and both of those events would be difficult to replicate or justify these days.

Regards,

Ron
