Here's a reply I got from CNET labs from my previous email concerning there x2 review...

Derek:

On USR's web site you will need to have purchased a modem after August 15, 1996 for it to be guaranteed upgradable by software download to x2. US Robotics has said to me that they plan to make the products upgradable through a firmware download to the standard. But this has not been *guaranteed* by USR and I would be suspicious of any such guarantee.

Since the DSP on the USR products are different from the ones used in the Rockwell and Lucent implementations, it will require reprogramming which is not guaranteed to match that of K56Flex (provided that does become the standard). If the USR DSP cannot be reprogrammed to match the standard implementation, it will not be upgradable through a firmware download alone. I stated in my original review that USR will guarantee an upgrade to the standard. Since the standard has not been set, it would be presumptuous to assume that the hardware can simply be reprogrammed to meet standard specifications.

My advice is still to wait a month to see how it all shakes out. Since AOL is the only service that is currently offering a public trial, I think that this is reasonable albeit conservative advice.

Sincerely,
