NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin is resigning, the White House confirmed Wednesday.

Rubin plans to officially announce his decision later Wednesday, CNN has learned. Deputy Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers will be named to succeed him

The Dow industrials immediately plunged nearly 200 points on rumors of the news that Rubin, one of President Clinton's closest advisers, will step down.

After the news was confirmed, the Dow rebounded somewhat, but remained down about 100 points.
