Cascade extends carrier-class remote access to Japanese
Internet market
WESTFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 1997--

Approval of Cascade's New High Capacity Access Switches

Will Enable Japanese Network Service Providers To

Meet Increasing Demand For Dial Access

Cascade Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: CSCC) today announced it has extended its
worldwide remote access presence with the introduction of the AX High Capacity Access
Switches into Japan. It has been estimated that Japan is the fourth largest market for
Internet access today, and the AX is poised to capitalize on the growth of this market with
its "carrier-class" feature set.

"Our goal to deploy the AX in the largest Internet markets around the world has made Japan
a top priority. Having met the requirements of the Japan Approvals Institute for
Telecommunications Equipment (JATE), we are now well positioned to help network
service providers meet the demand for Internet dial access ports in Japan," said Jim Dolce,
vice president and general manager, remote access business unit, Cascade Communications
Corp.

Dolce added, "We are pleased with the industry's interest in this product for the emerging
carrier-class remote access segment. Cascade believes that the AX products are the
highest capacity device on the market today and the only remote access server to offer
carrier customers the protection of full logic redundancy."

"Cascade has enjoyed success in the Frame Relay and ATM markets in Japan," said Kurt
Trampedach, vice president, international sales, Cascade Communications Corp. "Now with
the addition of the AX family, we can offer our service provider customers a complete
product portfolio to help them deploy Internet connections to thousands of subscribers."

The AX products mark the emergence of a new market segment for central site remote
access switches, characterized by their capacity, performance scalability, availability, and
network management. The mid range AX 800 is available now in Japan at a list price of
$757.00 U S Dollars per modem port in a 240 port configuration. The high-end AX 1600 will
be available in 2Q97 at a list price of only $674.00 US Dollars per modem port in a 576 port configuration.
