The Motley Fools update their Foolish Four portfolios on Jan 1 every year...

And I agree with you about the volatility of the rankings leading to situations where your Foolish Four portfolio would differ from mine by as much as 40% even if I started only a day before or after you did! In a normal Dow 10 portfolio, this variation is more likely to be 10%, if at all.

What I think the Motley Fools should do in order to avoid such anomalies is to keep a kind of "running average" of the rankings, say over the last 30 days, instead of an updated ranking based on the price of the day. In fact, I did something like that (though on a more informal basis) and my portfolio doubled up on International Paper instead of AT&T!
