Neuralab

Neuralab was formed by Elan Corporation to fund the
continued development of its Alzheimer's research and
development efforts within its Athena Neuroscience
division. Neuralab's strategy is to find compounds that
inhibit the production of beta amyloid, prevent the
aggregation or deposition of beta amyloid into the toxic
plaques, and prevent or reduce the neurotoxicity and
inflammation associated with beta amyloid in plaque.
Their fundamental strength in Alzheimer's is based on a
proprietary mouse model, reputed to be the best in the
industry. This transgenic mouse overexpresses amyloid
precursor protein (APP), which leads to the formation
of beta amyloid plaques. The Company has lead
compounds which inhibit beta secretase, an enzyme
essential in the conversion of APP to beta amyloid.
This compound, when administered to mice on a
chronic basis, not only prevents the formation of
amyloid plaques in the brain, but it can significantly
reduce already formed plaques.

I had assumed that Athena was in the clinic at the end of the year. This may signal that SIBI/BMY are the leaders. OTOH, it may indicate that the Athena focus changed to aggregation rather than processing, and that there could be a good reason for such. Won't be boring!
