America Online Unveils Plans
For Interactive TV Venture
An INTERACTIVE JOURNAL News Roundup

May 11, 1999
America Online Inc. announced plans Tuesday to launch an interactive television service, unveiling partnerships with DirecTV, Hughes Network Services, Philips Electronics NV and Network Computer Inc. to deliver content over the DirecTV satellite service.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Company Profile: America Online

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DirecTV will collaborate with AOL on a new service that combines digital satellite television programming and interactive television Internet service. Hughes Network Systems plans to design and build an AOL TV/DirecTV set-top receiver. DirecTV and Hughes Network are units of General Motors Corp.'s Hughes Electronics Corp.

Network Computer, primarily owned by Oracle Corp. and AOL's Netscape Communications unit, agreed to provide a "complete" software platform for AOL TV. Network Computer has gradually shifted from a maker of low-cost "dumb terminals" to a maker of Internet appliances.

Philips agreed to make a set-top box that will connect to AOL via a 56K modem. The box also will be enabled for digital subscriber line, or DSL, the high-speed "broadband" service being developed by local phone companies. National Semiconductor Corp. will make the chips that run the set-top box.
