re: anti-competitive practices by Intel Corporation
Dear Dept of Justice:
As a consumer of computer products I have been disturbed by Intel Corporation's attempts to exclude competition from entering the marketplace for desktop and mobile microprocessor units (MPU's).
Intel, which controls, by some estimates, more than 90% of the microprocessor market, has created a new, unacceptable barrier to competition for other microprocessor manufacturers in the establishment of a patented socket for its new MPU's. This patented socket controls the interface between Intel MPU's and the motherboards which connect the MPU to all of the other functions and peripherals used by contemporary computers. Because of Intel's dominant position in the marketplace, patented control of this interface prevents competition from designing MPU's that can be used in place of Intel's products. Alternative design is very difficult to implement since the defacto standard established by Intel makes it extremely expensive for any component or peripheral manufacturer to adopt or develop products for an alternative architecture.
Intel has progressively moved towards vertical integration and control of the microprocessor and interfacing motherboard market. Its previous socket architecture was an open architecture;- any microprocessor manufacturer could use it when designing their MPUs. This allowed competitive products to be marketed and designed. Intel's new patent closes that opportunity and creates unacceptable barriers to entry for any other MPU manufacturer.
The Department of Justice protects US citizens from monopolies and schemes to create defacto monopolies. A vertically integrated IBM and AT&T required that the Department of Justice intervene in past decades to protect the public. Its actions permitted a vibrant, free, market environment to arise in both computer technology and telecommunications. These courageous actions ultimately benefited all citizens, and even the economic position of the US in the world trade for these products and services.
Intel Corporation is currently in the process of consolidating a monopoly in MPU's with its clever socket patent scheme. It is doing this precisely at a moment in time when viable competition from two or more smaller companies are threatening its monopoly position.
As a citizen of the United States, I request that you investigate these unfair monopolistic practices. I also request that you use the power of the United States government to maximize the opportunity for free market enterprise by prohibiting Intel from engaging in these anti-competitive practices.
Please respond to this communication.
Sincerely,
your name
