Time for "Pat's Soapbox":
The latest rant by Mr. Pabst has me shaking my head again. The man is an ass. To paraphrase Mr. Ballards words from the shareholders meeting regarding Mr. Pabst, "The freedom of the Internet can be a good thing but some people have forgotten their manners." If you guys want to do something about it, don't give him any more hits. Negative press is still press.
E-mailing mercury is a waste of time. We've been down this road before. They benchmarked Banshee v-synch on so that it was refresh rate limited but did not do the same for the competitors. It was either shoddy testing or purposeful manipulation. They don't care. They are being paid for their benchmarks.
Brian Hook is not biased against 3dfx. The man is simply stating things we don't like to hear. V3 has banding, lower image quality, late ICD etc. This doesn't mean he's not a pompous arrogant ass. Of course he is. He's just a level-headed pompous arrogant ass.
Speaking of pompous asses, I must admit I may have made a hasty assumption about the delay of the 3500. I made the assumption that if it were possible for 3dfx to produce the 3500 they would. A friend of mine, Allan, fired of an e-mail to me on the topic and I admit that I agree with him 100%. You gotta believe we are currently production limited. Here is the e-mail:
The timing, design, and delay in 3500 strikes me this way. They were hedging their bets with a faster chip in the works if they were getting beaten at retail. They're not. So...........utilize your limited production to make what's selling now and delay new product to meet major OEM specs which includes TV/FM and more. Also gives you time to acquire more production both inside and outside. I really think they would have done 3500 sooner if sales had been sluggish for the 2000 and 3000. And I really think the more fully featured 3500 will be irresistible to OEMs. It will have wide public appeal. I still think they are relying on their retail demand to eventually help leverage them in to OEM situations.
