Gerstner's comments on COMPAQ are starting to sound like EP's comments on DELL. His dismissal of COMPAQ's diversification as a feeble attempt to emulate IBM, betrays some anxiety. His general thesis that services and high-end hardware is the sweet spot and that PC's have a future as part of networking, is all good for COMPAQ.

Gerstner was a controversial choice when appointed to IBM - not many tech companies would have been glad to have him. He also took some time to turn things around. The share price dipped after he took over.
