Dan, tick data is actually a toughie.

RealTick III has a LOT of trouble with it.

Yes, the latest fast machines with AGP video cards help a lot.

Townsend's stock response if you are experiencing lags is "how many tick charts do you have open". They don't recommend more than a couple. (I usually have a dozen open, which I can only do successfully since upgrading my machine. Maybe they've updated their software as well. I'd guess that their drawing code is fairly inefficient.)

At one time (on a 150mHz Pentium - my old machine) it was so bad that bringing up ONE tick chart for a fast-moving stock would lock-up my machine!

I should note that I don't use ordinary tick charts, but a variation that shows the bid and offer as well as the trades. It multiplies the amount of data by more than 3. (Because there are typically more bid/ask changes than trades.)
