I think Cable has the "lead" over xDSL in terms of getting customers, but xDSL is the superior technology. As mindmeld pointed out, cable speed cannot be guaranteed b/c it is dependent on the number of users. High-margin business customers cannot put mission critical information at such risk; in any event, cable systems for the most part don't pass through business areas, another big negative. xDSL in contrast comes in many different flavors for different needs. For consumers, it can run at 256k; for companies, it can run at 1 mbps 2 mbps or even 7 mbps. And it runs over your normal phone line. If xDSL can get off the ground in the next two years, IMO, it will win the battle for broadband access to the net.
