John, I think you have bad margin data: MSFT 03/96 12/95 03/95 Gross Margin 86.62 84.97 85.19 EBIT Margin 25.49 26.20 24.95 INTC 03/96 12/95 03/95 Gross Margin 47.87 47.84 54.77 EBIT Margin 19.25 18.93 24.99 and for comparison purposes: AMAT 01/96 10/95 01/95 Gross Margin 47.74 46.65 47.03 EBIT Margin 16.49 15.81 13.00 From this, one can see that margins at INTC contracted from a year ago due to market forces. In INTC's case, it's mostly due to its slight mis-step into the low-margin board business. Still, I think at a F97 P/E of 8.8 (INTC) and 9.7 (AMAT), big semis are great value plays at the moment.
