I like it when two stocks are at about the same price as Cisco and Tellabs are right now because it gives you an opportunity to look at the comparative investments more cleanly:

Co. earn:(12mos.)(qtr) P/E(ftm) 99E 00E Sales Est 5yr Growth
Cisco 1.17 .38 76 1.47 1.83 6.57B 26%
Tellabs 2.22 .52 46 2.51 3.17 7.08B 28%
Source: Yahoo profiles.

It is clear that Tellabs is far-and-away the better stock to buy. It has higher earnings in real terms and in the future. It has a higher growth rate; and it has bigger sales. This is not to disparage Cisco (I am long Cisco as well) but it does point out how screwy this market values companies it perceives to be an "internet infrastructure play" and one that it perceives to be an "old-world play." Food for thought. (edit--Now I think I'll post this over at the Cisco thread to see if we can get some interest over here in Tellabs.)
