Xinhua (May 12) DOHA -- Libyan Secretary for Economy
and Trade Abdel-hafiz el-ziletti said in Doha that
Libya is focusing on developing the oil
and gas industry and boosting tourism and
transit trade between European market, the
north African coast and the Middle East.

He made the remarks in an interview with the
Arabic daily Al Haiyat on the sidelines of the
Arab Financial Funds meeting in Doha.

In the interview published Tuesday, the
minister said his country lost 26 billion U.S.
dollars as a result of the U.N. sanctions
imposed on the north African state in 1992.

The sanctions were suspended last month
after two Libyans suspected of bombing a
Pan Am airliner in 1988 were turned over for
trial.

He said that the 10 billion-dollar Great
Artificial River project is to be completed by
the end of next year. The project is to
provide about 6 million cubic meters of water
per day for farming and drinking.
