Retailing Extreme DVD The Highs, The Lows

Low-end DVD players are in high demand and short supply, while high-end models are becoming more expensive and elite.
Manufacturers are confident, however, that shipments of low-end product will soon be up to par with retailers' needs. On the high-end side, the ceiling has yet to be seen.
"There is a demand for DVD players that we've been unable to fill," due largely to the industry's miscalculation of overall fourth-quarter strength and DVD popularity, said Rusty Osterstock, assistant general manager for Panasonic DVD. "DVD has had a stronger and faster growth curve than VHS or even CDs when they were first introduced."
The Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association is projecting 1.63 million DVD players will sell in 1999, after an estimated 1,250,000 sold in 1998. But Osterstock is betting on a "conservative" estimate of 2 million DVD players or an "optimistic" 2.5 million.
