I don't understand your disk partitioning, but forget
the active partition question. I understand enough to
see that it's irrelevant and misleading.

So you can see the partition when you boot your
normal NT, and it is labeled "J". That means you
either have a hell of a lot of partitions or have
relettered them. Which?

How do you know you have designated the correct
partition in boot.ini? I took your word that it was
the "next partition over" but how do you know that?
J is not a very likely letter for the "next partition
over" from C.

Here's how to find out. Boot your normal NT and open
the disk administrator, then find the J partition
on your IDE primary master drive. If you've told
me correctly, it's the drive with C on it. Now,
from left to right, if C is 1, what number is J?

PS No beach, unfortunately. A few months back I
planned to retire in July, but lately it looks like
November is more realistic to leave my products
in reasonable shape. However, this morning I told my
wife I'd decided to move my retirement up a trifle.
"When?" she said. "Ten o'clock," I said. She laughed,
but it wasn't that funny. It was the way I felt, anyhow.
Oh well, just a few more months ...
