You may be right, but I don't think the trade deficit has to be "paid off." My understanding is that the trade deficit means we sell less to foreigners than they sell to us. Which is another way of saying that they buy more dollars than we buy of their currency.

The trade deficit will become balanced when foreigners unload their dollars, with obvious implications of the dollar exchange rate.
