In January of 1997 AMD started taking orders for the 166 Mhz chips of unknown yield, unknown quality and unknown production volume. Better late than never but whether this can compete with a Pentium 200 at the low-end has yet to be determined. Let me repeat that just in case you did not hear me correctly the first time: 166 Mhz, taking orders in January 1997.

AMD is not resting on its laurels because it has no laurels to rest on. Their technically inept and subsequently canceled processor is not something to crow about. All hopes now rest on the purchased K6 from NextGen which is still a big question mark in terms of volume, yield, quality, et cetera. The K6 is little more than vaporware and it won't graduate from that status until the end of the year when they actually might compete with the low-end Pentium 200 in very small volume shipments.
