South Africa's cut-throat internet industry is poised for another shake-up with the imminent launch of the first free-access service for consumers. The new arrival is backed by UK-based X-Stream, whose 232,000 customers make it one of Britain's top five internet service providers. Most of South Africa's existing 100-plus service providers are still losing money after pumping vast sums into their networks and battling for subscription fees and advertising revenue. The arrival of X-Stream could propel many into bankruptcy if customers are enticed by the free service, and advertisers follow. X-Stream's service is being tested by about 200 users. It will be launched officially next month.
