Robert,

I will be happy to give you my opinions. First, I would say that I
don't believe that their greatest strength is in manufacturing but in
process development and swift transfer of new processes to
manufacturing.

For manufacturing, IHMO the high volume of a few circuits allows
Intel to quickly improve process margins and yields. Intel is
extremely disciplined and is able to keep all of their Fabs in sync
in terms of process variations/specifications, improvements and yield.
When an improvement is instituted in Rio Rancho, all the other Fabs
(Chandler, Ireland ...) will implement the change. This sounds easy
and straight forward, but it isn't in reality. Intel's yields are
"world class" and this gives them the lowest possible manufacturing
costs.

IMHO, process development is Intel's strength. They are very
aggressive in setting design rules, FET performance and features
that will give them a competitve edge on CPU performance. They
also have the financial clout to evaluate many different technology
alternatives and select the most promising. The only other company
that I feel is even close to Intel in this area is IBM. But IBM is
terrible at capitalizing on their technology strengths.

This strength (process development) is why I don't see AMD, Cyrix ...
being much of a long term threat to Intel. The challenge for Intel
is to find a way to move up the "food chain". From making CPU's for
PC, to making CPU's/graphics chips/motherboards/systems for the
workstation and business computers (where the margins and revenue are)

Regards,
Gary
