Gary,

Almost everyone acknowledges the fact that Intel's next generation MPUs underperform on the most popular OS of today(WIN 95). Intel's manufacturing capabilties are awesome, but not that far ahead of anyone else in the industry. The American examples of companies on a par with Intel are TI and IBM:

ti.com

The Japanese and Koreans are capable of IC manufacturing processes equal to Intel also. The future of chipmaking is in design. There are many conglomerates that spend huge sums of money on fabs. What should they build is the most important question?

Currently, Intel has a lot of cash to spend on layout. Their metal pitches are the tightest in the industry. Their small die size is a result of this. The Klamath does not seem small compared to the K6( 190^mm+ to 160^mm+ respectively).

Intel's larget competitive advantage does not lie in design or IC manufacturing prowess. It lies in their inertia. They control the x86 market at this point so chipset and socket design is where they will be able to maintain control.
